Treat Your Beloved Pet To The Very Best Pets When you think of pets, cats and dogs probably come to mind first. However, pets come in all sizes and varieties, from small birds to large dogs or horses. They range from inexpensive goldfish that cost a few dollars each to pure bred animals that can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. If you love animals and want to find the perfect pet for you, spend some time researching the different kinds of pets that are available before you make your choice. Cost Cost can be an important factor when choosing between different pets. If you are looking for an inexpensive pet, go to your local animal shelter and choose from their selection. By purchasing your pets there, you are helping to save animals from euthanasia and getting a new pet for a small price. However, many other kinds of pets can be quite expensive to buy and even more expensive to maintain. Fish can be purchased for a relatively small amount, but aquariums and other needed equipment can be pricey. Horses, of course, are an example of pets that are expensive to own in every way. Decide how much you are willing to pay for your pets and their care. Time commitment Most pets will require some commitment of your time. They will need to be fed, housed and cared for in numerous ways. If you do not have a lot of time to offer a pet, you may want to try fish. Fish do need to be fed but equipment is available to help you with regular feedings; other care is fairly minimal. Cats and dogs will require more from you with regard to playtime, grooming and training. Before you decide on the best pet for you, think about your lifestyle and the amount of time that you are willing to invest in your pets. Relational or not? Do you prefer pets who are relational? Horses and dogs are examples of pets that are likely to form close bonds with their owners. Cats and birds are more relational than fish. Consider the kind of relationship that you expect to form with your pet and which animals are most likely to bond. Space constraints If you live on a farm or have extensive property, you may be able to choose any pet you want. Most people, however, are limited to some degree by the space that they have available for pets. Do you live in an apartment? You will want to choose a relatively quiet pet that does not require a lot of space. A home owner with a large fenced yard will probably have no problems finding space for a dog. If you prefer pets that live indoors, decide ahead of time how big you want your pet to be. Even if you adore that large dog, he may not be the best choice for an indoor pet. Of course, it depends on your preferences, but these options should be considered before you head to the pet store and become attached to an animal that isn’t the right size for your space. Other pets Don’t forget to consider the preferences of any pets you currently own. What is your pet’s temperament? You may already have an idea of what he will think of sharing you with a new animal, or you may not know until you bring home a new pet. However, it is wise to at least consider the companionship needs of the pets you already have. Where to shop The most obvious place to look for pets is your local pet store. This is a good choice if you want or need assistance in making your selection. Employees can also give you advice from time to time on issues like feeding, grooming and training. If you want to purchase a pure bred animal, check with a breeder near you for prices and more information. Buying pets through a breeder assures you of the animal’s background; it also gives you the chance to raise the animal from a young age. As mentioned earlier, you may select your pet at a shelter, though your choices will be somewhat limited and you will be told little or nothing about your pet’s background. A fourth option is to purchase your new pet through the internet. As with all online purchases, be careful of this method of sales and find out all that you can about the animal and the seller before you complete the sales agreement. Summary Pets can be a great source of companionship and enjoyment. Before you make your choice, think about your expectations and limitations in all of the above areas. Make a choice based on knowledge as well as love. By doing so, you are likely to bond quickly with your new pets and form a relationship that will last for years.
